about

Piano:Dismantled is a collection of tracks which combine piano, played by 5 different collaborators, with modular synthesizer. Each pianist contributed a series of recordings, which were then processed and re-imagined into entirely new pieces of music, using the modular in various different ways. Granular synthesis, where each sound is split into tiny fractions of itself, microseconds in length, and then re-assembled in various ways to create new textures, features heavily throughout.

The tracks contain varying amounts of the original source material. In some of them the original composition is present in its entirety. In others, the final outcome is unrecognizable from the source, and it's almost impossible to distinguish between what started out as a piano and what started out as an oscillator.

The album is more of an exercise in musical experimentation, as opposed to one where there is a definite concept or narrative. But during the process, a sort of underlying theme did present itself, an overall feeling which pervades the album and ties the whole thing together as a cohesive whole.

Piano: Dismantled was recorded in February 2020 and will be released on cassette and digital via the Polypores Bandcamp page in March 2020. The artwork was created by Nick Taylor, who has worked with Polypores on a number of previous releases.
